The Carel Corporation
performed a site characterization of a waste disposal facility in
Utah. The purpose of the project was to determine if trace metal
concentrations were due to a release from the facility or were of
natural origin. The project involved a detailed review of the
geologic setting, including structural setting, and a review of the
common indicators of a leachate release or landfill gas impact. The
report provided detailed information on trends of major ions and/or
redox sensitive constituents, particularly those mobilized under
reducing conditions. The report concluded that the trace metal
concentrations were not the result of a potential release from the
facility but rather were reflective of natural variation of
groundwater and subsurface strata.
